Also known as: Ylang Ylang, Tail Grape, Manorangini, or Hari Champa
Artabotrys Odoratissimus
This tropical Asian vine is said to have the most intoxicating fruity fragrance of all the Ylang Ylang species out there! It has the appearance of a large shrub at first but eventually climbing and creeping to a mature 30 feet. Flowers emerge Spring to Fall but more so during the warmer months. They are first a pale green in color that turn a canary yellow with age. They attract butterflies and hummingbirds who are delighted by the nectar they produce. Picked flowers are very long lasting and hold their scent for days, if kept in water. The flower extract is made into expensive perfume like Chanel No.5, soaps, oils, and have long been used in Asian folk medicine to treat various symptoms and diseases.
It prefers full sun or medium shade. It can handle light drought when established, though it grows best with regular watering. It is also a very seaside and salt tolerant plant, meaning it can survive in areas with higher humidity or intense exposure to salt water. It can be grown in a container with strategic pruning and brought indoors to be protected from freezing temps. USDA Zone 9-11, being able to withstand temperatures of at least 30°F for a short time.
