A species of poppy found in Mexico and now widely naturalized in many parts of the world, including the United States. It is an perennial herb, growing up to 150 cm with a slightly branched tap root. It has showy ornamental yellow flowers. Leaves are thistle-like and alternate, without leaf stalks (petioles), toothed (serrate) and the margins are spiny. The grey-white veins stand out against the bluish-green upper leaf surface.
This wonderful plant is said to have antibacterial, anti inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, analgesic, hallucinating and sedative properties. Almost all the parts of the plant (the seeds, leaves, roots) are used as a medicine but the dosage is very very important as all the parts of the plant has toxic alkaloids and is toxic beyond certain amount when taken internally.
It exudes a yellow juice when cut and is widely used for treating many skin diseases in different parts of the world, like ringworm, scabies, itching, and eczema. The seed and leaf extract has strong larvicidal properties and can be used as a mosquito repellent. Harm has been done to humans especially in India by this plant as the seeds and the oil are used as an adulterant. The seeds of this plant closely resemble mustard seeds so sometimes the mustard seeds are adulterated with argemone seeds. Also argemone oil extracted from the seeds is sometimes used as an adulterant for mixing with sesame oil. When ingested it leads to a condition called epidemic dropsy which usually results in pitting edema and breathlessness. This plants is also toxic to animals and cattle avoid grazing it.
It thrives well in poor soil and in extreme drought conditions. It prefers well-drained soil in full sun. USDA hardiness: 7-10
