Robinia hispida
Also known as: Bristly Locust, Rose-Acacia, or Moss Locust, Standing Sweet Pea

A multi-stemmed deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States. It has a upright spreading habit of growth up to 10 feet high and 15 feet wide. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a fast rate and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 60 years or more.

Chains of lightly scented lilac purple pea-like flowers with rose overtones hang below the branches in mid spring. The fruits are showy purple pods displayed in mid summer. Purplish bristly hairs cover the stems and branches and it also has spines at the base of the leaf stems.

It is considered one of the best erosion control shrubs for steep sloping sites with active erosion and it does have the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil. This shrub should only be grown in full sunlight. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate any standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for xeriscaping or the moisture-conserving landscape. It is not particular as to soil type or pH and is able to handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments.
This shrub will require occasional maintenance and upkeep and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed.
