Musa Balbisiana 10 Seeds, Wild Banana Fruit Berry Tree Garden Ornamental
Musa Balbisiana
Also known as: The wild banana
A species of wild banana native to eastern south Asia, northern southeast Asia, and southern China. It is one of the wild ancestors of the cultivated
hybrids that make up the modern banana we've all grown to love and eat.
It is not actually a tree, despite its tree-like form. Instead, it is a perennial herbaceous plant with a hard, fibrous “trunk” that is actually as pseudo-stem, composed not of wood, but of overlapping leaf bases. It often grows with several pseudo-stems in a cluster, which may grow to 20 feet or taller and 1 foot in diameter. Leaves are up to 9 feet long. The primary stem bears a single large terminal inflorescence that is red to maroon in color. This develops into a bunch of bananas, consisting of 8 clusters of 15 or 16 bananas (technically, berries) arranged in two rows. They are considered inedible only because of the seeds they contain.
They enjoy well drained but a moist, rich organic mix. Remember try to stay away from wet, mucky or dry, sandy soils. Depending on your location full sun is best. The foliage seems to not brown in full sun like modern day hybrids, which makes it a great choice. They add a wonderful accent to any outdoor space, tropical garden or patio. In very cold zones containerized banana trees can be brought inside for the winter months. Most will survive a very light frost and quickly return to normal in spring. In the northern end of their grow zone they should be brought indoors or protected with mulch during the winter months. Overall very easy to grow and require little care. USDA zones 9b-11.
This offer here is for 10 seeds.
