It is a deciduous, perennial vining shrub growing to 2.5 m (8ft) by 4 m (13ft) at a medium rate. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and can also be cross pollinated by bees and insects. Purple flowers appear in late spring to early summer and the bright orange-red Goji berries ripen from August to October. The fresh, ripe fruits are sweet with a mild licorice flavor. The berries may be eaten fresh or sun-dried to be enjoyed later and is also used to make liquor. The young shoots are edible as well.
It can be pruned to a more compact shrub or a multi trunked small tree and can grow either in containers or in the ground. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. Appreciates sun to part shade with regular water needs; It is deer resistant. USDA hardiness zone 5-10
