A famous All-American perennial species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. Easily grown to 15-36" tall x 18-36" wide. Mexican Hat is the mahogany-red colored form of the Prairie Coneflower that blooms from mid-summer into fall. A good naturalizing wildflower, that attracts bees, songbirds, and butterflies. The fine foliage contains chemicals which make it unpalatable to deer while the young foliage is very nutritious to livestock.
This sun-loving plant does best in well drained, rocky, sandy, and clay soils. Very drought resistant once established.
