Acacia mearnsii
Also known as: Black Wattle
Here is a fast growing leguminous, nitrogen fixing evergreen tree or spreading unarmed shrub. Native to Australia and Tasmania, it is often used as a commercial source of tannin and the wood is hard and useful for fuelwood, poles, fencing posts and tool handles. It is widely cultivated in many parts of the temperate world as an ornamental and agro-forestry tree but can also become invasive in some parts of the world. It is noted for attracting wildlife.
It typically grows rounded or shapeless to a height of 10 m (33 ft) and has smooth grey-brown bark that is used for adhesive gum. The scented flowers are arranged in spherical heads of twenty to forty and are pale yellow or cream-colored. All parts are finely hairy.
Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, prefers well-drained moist soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil.
Suitable pH: mildly acid and neutral soils and can grow in very acid soils.
It cannot grow in the shade and is not wind tolerant. Seeds may remain viable for up to 50 years and germination may be stimulated by fire. USDA hardiness zone 8-11.
This offer is for 25 seeds.
